How To Change The Built-In Squarespace Domain

When you create a Squarespace site you’ll notice the URL is a combination of random words and characters & numbers. For example the built in domain of one of my testing sites is the following.

https://maroon-tan-mlxh.squarespace.com/

If this was a client site and I wanted to share a Password Protected link for them to view during development they may be slightly confused. It doesn’t look very elegant or professional. Luckily we can change this automatically generated domain to something a little more relevant, without having to purchase or connect our actual domain just yet.

To change this navigate to the ‘Domains’ Settings Panel, you can find this using the Search Shortcut. You’ll then want to click on the built in domain, which will bring up an additional menu in which you can click into the ‘Site ID’ field and edit.

Squarespace customize the built in domain

Now my domain name is -

https://abi-portfolio.squarespace.com/

Note that these free built in domains will still contain ‘.squarespace.com’ at the end, you’ll want to purchase or connect a custom domain before launching the site to get the most professional end result.
